Birth Date & Place

Esme was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1895.

Change to Vampire

Esme was changed into a vampire by Carlisle Cullen. This took place in Ashland, Wisconsin in 1921 when she was 26 years old.

Current Family

Esme is married to Carlisle Cullen. The couple act as parents to the younger members of their coven; Alice Cullen, Edward Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Jasper Hale, and Rosalie Hale. Esme has said that she also considers Bella Swan, Edward's human girlfriend, to be one of her children.

Appearance

As a vampire, Esme is physically only 26 years old. In addition to the 'vegetarian' vampire gold/black eyes and white skin, she is described within the books as follows.

Twilight, Page 282:

She had the same pale, beautiful features as the rest of them. Something about her heart-shaped face, her billows of soft, caramel-colored hair, reminded me of the ingénues of the silent-movie era. She was small, slender, yet less angular, more rounded than the others.

Esme was also described as being dressed in light coloured casual clothing. It should be noted that her slender yet less angular figure is due to her having been changed into a vampire only a few days after giving birth to her baby (see the relationship page for more information on this). Stephenie Meyer has also said that she is 5'6" tall.

Personality

Esme's most prominent personality trait is her ability to love passionately. It was this trait that was accentuated when she was changed into a vampire. Consistent with this, she has very strong maternal instincts. In addition, Esme appears to be the least 'sporty' member of the family as she is the only one who doesn't actively participate in their Baseball games; she told Bella, "I prefer to referee – I like keeping them honest" (T 321).

Religion

Although Carlisle is apparently the only member of the Cullen family who holds the belief that vampires are not eternally damned, the fact that the strongest facet of his relationship with Esme is spiritual in nature may suggest that she also shares some of his faith.

Hobbies & Interests

Aside from acting as the mother figure within the Cullen family, Esme enjoys spending her time studying architecture and antique restoration. She likes to work on "historical fixer-uppers" and as part of this, she is responsible for restoring the historical homes which the Cullen family live in.

Car

Although the rest of the Cullen family have treated themselves to fast cars, it appears that Esme has not. It would seem that she prefers to either be driven by one of the others or to borrow their cars.

Private Space

In the family's Forks home, Esme keeps a small study on the second floor to enable her to work on her hobbies; it is able to be accessed via Carlisle's larger study. The pair also have a shared bedroom, bathroom, and closet on the top floor of the house.

Human Life Before 1911

Raised on a farm on the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio, she enjoyed a happy childhood and adolescence. Esme also evidentially had a good education as, when her hopes of falling in love and marrying didn't come to fruition, she intended to become a teacher. As for the actual events of her life, little is known before her brief meeting as a sixteen year old with Dr. Cullen in 1911.
