Timeline

This is a quick timeline of the relationship between Mr. Knightley and Emma.

Chapter 01

Mr. Knightley visits the Woodhouses after Miss Taylor's (now Mrs. Weston) wedding.

Chapter 05

Mr. Knightley talks to Mrs. Weston about his disapproval with Emma's friendship with Harriet; he owns to thinking Emma exceptionally pretty ("I confess that I have seldom seen a face or figure more pleasing to me than hers. ...I love to look at her; ...how very handsome she is."); he mentions his wish to see Emma in love for "it would do her good."

Chapter 08

Mr. Knightley and Emma quarells about Robert Martin and Mr. Elton for Harriet.

Chapter 12

Emma and Mr. Knightley make up, with Emma contriving to make it happen.

Chapter 18

Emma talks about Frank Churchill to Mr. Knightley, to which he reacts rather strongly with obvious disapproval of the man; Emma notes how very uncharacteristic of Mr. Knightley is their debate, and wonders at this occurence.

Chapter 26

Mrs. Weston tries her hand at match-making and matches Mr. Knightley up with Jane Fairfax, to which Emma vehemently disapproves of; she continues to be disturbed by it and scrutinizes Mr. Knightley's attentions on Jane, after which she rests assured of his disinterestedness.

Chapter 33

Mrs. Weston and Emma bring up the prospect of the match between Jane Fairfax and Mr. Knightley, which Mr. Knightley denies vehemently. He is displeased and disturbed with the thought of Emma matching him up with Jane.

Chapter 38

Mr. Knightley dances with Harriet in reaction to Mr. Elton's disdaining to stand up with her, to Emma's gratification. They also both dance at the end of the night, both remarking that they are not really so much brother and sister to make it improper.

Chapter 41

The group has tea at Hartfield, and Mr. Knightley begins to form suspicions of an involvement between Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax, which Emma waves off as impossible.

Chapter 42

Mr. Knightley invites the group over to Donwell, and takes special care to make sure that Mr. Woodhouse accepts so that Emma would be present.

Chapter 43

Mr. knightley chides Emma on her treatment of Miss Bates on the Box Hill party; Emma is mortified about her behavior and of parting with Mr. Knightley in no good spirits.

Chapter 44

Emma, still penitent about her behavior at Box Hill, visits with the Bateses.

Chapter 45

Mr. Knightley uncharacteristically and abruptly removes to London. When he hears of Emma visiting the Bateses, he is gratified and takes her hand and almost brings it to his lips, but he stops. The act is not lost on Emma.

Chapter 46

The Westons find out about Frank Churchill's long-term secret engagement to Jane Fairfax, which they communicated immediately to Emma; Emma reassures them of the security of her heart as well as her disapproval of his actions.

Chapter 47

Emma finds out that Harriet has had her sights set on Mr. Knightley, and also the fact that she is in love with Mr. Knightley herself and he must marry no one but herself if he must marry at all.

Chapter 49

Mr. Knightley comes back upon his hearing about Frank Churchill's engagement to Jane Fairfax, wishing to comfort Emma; he finds out she is not affected by it; they come to an understanding of each other's feelings.

Chapter 51

Mr. Knightley suggests his moving to Hartfield in order to keep from inconveniencing Mr. Woodhouse.

Chapter 53

Mr. woodhouse is told about the engagement and impending marriage, and all their closest friends strive to convince him of the good it will bring.

Chapter 55

They marry. :)
